Martin Luther King Jr was a preacher and a humanitarian. He led protests and boycotts throughout the 1950’s and 60’s. However, here are some things that you probably did not know about Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1929. He was the middle child in a family of three. His father and grandfather were both once preachers in a nearby church, so they had influence on the choices Martin Luther King Jr. made later in life. A lot of the time Martin Luther King Jr. tried preaching about love.
Moreover, when Martin Luther King Jr. was a child he suffered through depression. In addition, when he was nine years old his grandma died. Martin Luther King Jr. was very close to his grandmother, and when she died, he started blaming himself for his grandma’s death. He started blaming himself to the extent where he jumped out of a two-story window and nearly committed suicide.
When Martin Luther King Junior started leading protest across the southern states, people who had originally supported segregation started getting nervous and mad. The police were often called in to arrest all sorts of protesters, and protest leaders were sent to jail. Martin Luther King Junior had been to jail many times because of his change?? in society, but none of his jail cells was as cramped as the Birmingham jail. First off, during the time Martin Luther King Jr. was in his jail cell, he was not able to call his family and tell what happened. Second, when he was in his jail cell, there was no window; all he had was a tiny rectangular hole in the cell where light could come through. Third, Martin Luther King Junior was not put in jail with a proper trial. He was just sentenced by the judge to jail, and he did not even have the chance to pay bail.
The life of Martin Luther King Jr was short. However, in his short life, he changed the lives of millions of African-American people. That is something we praise and remember about him even after his passing.
In the Gospel of Matthew 5:13-16, the Lord says, “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” God has called each and every one of us to be like salt and light in this world and bless the people around us. In doing so, we will bless the Lord and honor Him.
